What I Learned Traveling to Kenya

Writer's picture: Monica A.Monica A.

In the summer of 2022, our entire family traveled to Nairobi, Kenya...first moving around the city and then going on Safari. Packing for this trip was a learning experience because we were limited to just two bags each: one carry-on and one backpack. We would be gone for 2 weeks. I packed for myself and the kids, and through this process, I refined my packing strategy. I had never been forced to pack this light for this many days.

My Go-To Travel Outfit

After much trial and error, I’ve settled on an outfit that’s comfortable, practical, and versatile. My go-to travel look includes:

  • Black Felina Leggings: These are lightweight, stretchy, and easy to pair with any outfit. Also they are very comfortable on a long or short flight.

  • Black Tank Top: A simple and breathable base layer.

  • Lightweight Tunic-Style Sweater: Great for layering and provides just the right amount of warmth.

  • Jean Jacket or Poncho Sweater Wrap: Perfect for layering on top of the tunic. The sweater wrap is especially useful as it can doubles as a blanket on chilly overnight flights.

What I love about all of these elements is I can peel off layers as I move into warmer climates exiting the airport. I recently tried a three-piece outfit heavily advertised on Instagram as the "perfect travel outfit," but it didn’t suit me. The pant bottoms would pool onto the restroom floor in the plane—yuck! That experience solidified my preference for leggings. They’re not only comfortable but also versatile, pairing well with cute sneakers, boots, or even a comfortable wedge bootie and most importantly, they never touch the plane's restroom floor.

The Duplicate Strategy: Your Packing Lifesaver

One of the most valuable travel hacks I’ve learned is the power of a pre-packed toiletry bag. I use one by BagSmart. By purchasing duplicates of my favorite toiletry items and keeping them in a spacious travel bag, I save time and eliminate stress. Here’s what I include:

  • Travel-sized versions of toothpaste, toothbrush, mouthwash, makeup essentials such as concealer, mascara, lipstick or gloss, and skincare essentials.

  • A mini first-aid kit for any minor emergencies.

  • Shower cap, head wrap, comb and any other necessary hair items.

Having a dedicated travel toiletry bag means I never have to scramble to gather my essentials, and I rarely forget things. When it’s time to go, I simply grab the bag and head out the door. I do however, have to remember to check my stock levels from time to time or make a note when I am running low.

Smart Packing Tips: How to Travel Light

Back to Kenya. When you’re limited to carry-ons, smart packing is key. Here are some additional tips that worked for our trip to Kenya:

  1. Stick to a Color Palette: Neutral tones or a consistent color scheme allow for more outfit combinations. The lovely neutral and light clothing of the safari were great.

  2. Invest in Packing Cubes: These organizers maximize space and keep everything tidy. I love them.

  3. Wear Your Bulkiest Items: To save room, wear your heaviest shoes and outerwear on the plane.

  4. Roll, Don’t Fold: Rolling your clothes minimizes wrinkles and maximizes suitcase space.

  5. Limit Shoes: Stick to two pairs—one casual and one dressy—and wear the third. This can be the hardest part especially when you want to look fancy for evening dinners and be comfortable and casual during the day. Truth be told, I LOVE shoes!

The Benefits of Pre-Packing & Pre-Planning

Since our Kenya trip, we have made it somewhat of a game to not have to check a bag. This can be hard, but it is great when you don't have to wait in the long check-in line or pick-up a bag when you arrive at your destination. You also don't have to stress about having a lost bag and with a pre-packed toiletry bag and a carefully curated travel wardrobe, you’ll:

  • Save Time: No more last-minute packing stress.

  • Avoid Overpacking: Stick to essentials and travel light.

  • Stay Organized: Keep everything in its place and ready to go.

  • Enjoy the Journey: Spend less time worrying about packing and more time focusing on your adventure.

Our family trip to Kenya and our most recent trip to Italy and Greece were unforgettable. These travel strategies made it easier to focus on the experience instead of stressing over packing. I can recall walking up to check-in for our Africa trip and the airline representative said, "you packed for all 3 of you...you did an amazing job". When I tell you I felt so proud and accomplished. Whether you’re planning a short trip or a long journey, these tips can help you travel stress-free and stay organized.
